Summaries

  • A lack of classrooms means children have to study under trees or in dangerous temporary structures.
  • There are too few toilets and existing facilities are dilapidated, unsafe and unhygienic. Many children are forced to use the bush.
  • A lack of desks means children sit uncomfortably on the ground making concentration and writing difficult and uniforms very dirty.
  • A lack of teachers tables and chairs makes planning lessons and marking difficult.
  • A lack of training of School Management Committee members means they are unable to support school development or access the resources they're entitled to.
  • Parents and teachers lack basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS and are too shy to broach the subject with children. This results in a lack of awareness and a greater risk of contracting the virus.
  • A lack of extra curricular activities hinders the all-round development of the children.
  • A lack of awareness of child rights amongst parents, teachers and pupils.
  • The head teacher has not had any training in school management.
  • Pupils are ill-prepared for exams.
  • A lack of income opportunities in the area means that parents often can't afford to keep their children in school.

Plans

  • Construction of 4 classrooms.
  • Construction of a 5 door latrine block.
  • Provision of 84 children's desks.
  • Provision of teachers chairs and tables.
  • Train and mentor the 15 members of the School Management Committee.
  • Train 8 children to become HIV peer educators.
  • Develop a health club.
  • Learning through play and sports to make learning more fun and effective.
  • Raise awareness of child rights amongst parents, teachers and pupils.
  • Train the head teacher in school management.
  • Train teachers and district officials to prepare mock exam papers.
  • Support community members to develop their income generating activities so they can contribute more to the school’s development.

Latest updates:

Jul - Dec 2011
• INFRASTRUCTURE: Four grass-thatched huts have been constructed as teacher accommodation, and another semi-permanent teacher’s house is currently being built. Providing teachers with on-site accommodation is an important way of improving teacher morale and performance, as otherwise teachers often have to travel long, difficult journeys every day to reach school.
• LEARNING MATERIALS: The school received textbooks from USAID, the USA international development agency. These textbooks cover the core subjects (English, Social Sciences, Science and Maths), and will support pupils’ improved learning in the classroom.

Jan - Jun 2011
• COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: The School Building Committee has held community meetings this year to keep parents and other community members involved with construction projects at the school.
• INFRASTRUCTURE: Construction has started on a four-classroom block. Once completed, the new classrooms will significantly enhance the teaching and learning environment for both teachers and pupils at the school.
• INFRASTRUCTURE: Excavation is underway on pit latrines and once these are finished, hygiene and sanitation at the school will be significantly improved.
