Key Issues facing the school:

• Lack of classrooms means children have to study under trees or in dangerous temporary structures;
• Dilapidated toilets are unsafe and unhygienic; many children are forced to use the bush;
• Lack of desks means children sit uncomfortably on the floor making concentration and writing difficult;
• Lack of a teacher's office, desks and chairs for teachers makes planning lessons and marking difficult;
• Lack of teacher refresher training means lessons are often old fashioned rote learning and new techniques are not applied;
• Lack of training of the School Management Committee means they are unable to develop the school or access the resources they're entitled to;
• Parents often fail to identify the importance of giving girls an education;
• Lack of extra curricular activities hampers children's overall development;
• Most parents are not involved in the education of their children.

Summary of plans:

• Construction of 3 classrooms, a teachers office and 5 toilets;
• Provision of 63 desks, 3 teachers chairs, 3 teachers desks and a cupboard;
• 7 teachers to be given refresher training;
• Training and mentoring 5 members of the School Management Committee;
• Radio programmes to be aired to make parents and the school community aware of the importance of sending girls to school;
• Learning through play and sports to make learning more fun and effective;
• Work with the school community to develop the future direction of the school and review plans.

Latest updates:

• A meeting was held to discuss how the local community can work together with Build Africa to ensure the new school is successfully built, managed and maintained. There was good attendance, with 204 community members taking part;
• Soil treatment will be carried out before construction begins. This is due to termite infestation.
