Africa Blossoms Campaign
Build Africa is dedicated to providing access to education to Kenyan and Ugandan children and to overcome the gender gap that currently exists. The Africa Blossoms campaign aims to raise the funds to enable us to address this inequality.
Girls face a number of obstacles to completing their education which aren't faced by boys. In Uganda, within the districts of Kumi and Bukedea, the dropout rate for girls is 84%. Girls are forced to leave school due to reasons such as cultural beliefs regarding early marriage, the need for girls to provide for their families and the menstrual cycle and its associated challenges.
This ultimately means that women in society are less prepared to undertake income generating activities and support their families. In Kenya, 5% more women than men are living in poverty in rural areas and 80% of female headed households are below the poverty line. Enabling girls to stay in school and giving them the education that every child deserves is the first step to bridging this gender divide.
Working with Ugandan and Kenyan primary schools, we are aiming to address these issues. With your support, we will provide separate sanitary facilities for the female students and sanitary towels for older girls. We will raise awareness within communities, using mediums such as radio shows, of issues including early marriage and the value of sending girls to school rather than keeping them home to care for siblings. We will also train teachers in child friendly teaching methods, ensuring every child is treated as an individual and that gender specific issues are addressed by senior female teachers.
Your support can help us remove the barriers to education for girls and help Africa Blossom:
-
£15 will enable three women to save money and get started in business
-
£50 will supply sanitary towels enabling 20 girls to stay in school
-
£150 will establish a health club with HIV and AIDS materials in a school
-
£1,500 will support the gender programme for an entire school
